This worker won the employment lottery… but did they pay a price for it?

Some employees dream of the days they get to walk out of their jobs. They count down the minutes and the days until they can walk out of those doors and onto a new life. Maybe you're worried about quitting your job and not having any money to hold you over between that and the next thing. Or maybe you're scared you're going to be laid off, and you'll only have a short amount of time to get yourself together to move onto another job. But sometimes the stars align, and everything works out even better than you hoped it would. It's not often that this happens, but it happened here. This employee had the perfect storm of employment stuff going on that made them realize how grateful they were to be in the situation. They found themselves in. Leaving a job can be a very stressful time in your life. You're used to a certain schedule, a certain paycheck, and a certain routine in your day-to-day. Leaving that all behind can be a huge risk. It can take a while to transition from one thing to the next, and you might feel a little bit adrift while everything settles down. Your company can make this easier on you given the severance package they decide to serve up to you.

Company laid me off with 7 months severance 4 days before I was going to quit.

For context, the company got bought out earlier this year and things went downhill pretty quick after that. More micromanaging, a lot of meetings that did not need to exist, and eventually a rumor that a return to office mandate was coming. I am a little over two hours from the office so that always going to be a dealbreaker. I had been quitely

applying for a while and last month I landed something better, hybrid but only two days a week and the office is a few minutes from me instead of a two hour drive each way. My plan was just to give notice at the end of this week, help hand everything over, leave properly since i had been there over ten years. I had even worked it so i would get a week off before the new one started.

Then tuesday i log in and there is a "business update" on my calendar I did not put there. get on and it is my manager and someone from HR. RTO is official starting next month, and because I am outside the office radius my options are start commuting in or take a severance package, seven months pay plus a bonus, 24 hours to decide.

The timing of this couldn't have been any better for this employee.

Which, you can imagine. My notice was basically typed up already, i had the other offer sitting right there, and now rather than leaving with nothing i am getting seven months to go do a job i had already accepted. If they had waited a few more days i would have quit and walked out with nothing.

So now I have three weeks before the new job, a raise coming, and a severance check landing next month for a place I was leaving anyway. The one thing I have actually had to deal with is my home setup, because the new place

apparently has everyone on camera all the time and mine was rough. Never bothered at the old job, nobody there used their camera. So it has been desk, chair, second monitor, headphones, one of those emeet pixy cameras which i mostly got because I did not want to sit there fighting with drivers, and I finally sorted the lighting so i am not just a shadow on the call if i am going to be on video all day i would rather not look completely rough doing it.

Most places aren't legally required to give you any severance, so you're probably lucky to get a few weeks or a few months. You don't assume that it's going to last very long, so you hope that you can get something on your schedule quickly. But in this story, an employee looked into a situation that they couldn't have even imagined. They already had a job lined up, and then their employer decided to bless them. Gastronomiser Alarm bells about the on camera all of the time though. I turned down a role because of that.

skillsdontmatter One tip from someone this happened to. Do not post anything publicly about the new job and do not tell anyone still at the old place, not even people you think you trust. Word got back to my old toxic workplacd that I had something lined up, and they actually tried to claw backthe settlement over it. Keep it quiet until the check clears.

Sinver_Nightingale27 It really shows how much money these companies are actually sitting on. They will happily pay you seven months to do nothing, but the year you asked for a 2 percent raise there was suddenly no budget for it anywhere.

Yikes. That would be a hard pass for me. I would rather be spaced out at work (RTO) than have someone go check my camera and see me sitting at home, spaced out. resignation was basically already written makes this hilarious. You were four days away from leaving anyway, and they somehow managed to make your departure substantially more profitable.
